Demonstration of the Navy Electromagnetic Rail Gun prototype

The US Navy’s Electromagnetic Rail Gun that is under development at NSWC Dahlgren in Virginia. This is a prototype to demonstrate the technology of the rail gun for use on the future DDG-1000 class of Navy ships. This clip is from the show FutureWeapons on the Discovery Channel. It aired in April 2007. The show occasionally repeats on the Military Channel (part of the Discovery Channel family). (NOTE – This has nothing to do with the movie Transformers 2.)

all thanks to the military engineers… gotta love the military. it would be awsome to go into a branch and become an engineer so you could design and build stuff like that……but….hows your math and chemistry

You are thinking of the 5 inch gun, which is fired on a regular basis. This gun is rarely fired.

Land based rail gun is pretty much useless in warfare, this is why they are being built for shipboard operations. Same thing with the CIWS, built for ships but then were also placed on land for mortar defense.
US Army? Rail gun is US NAVY.

more likely that these guns will be mounted on satellites up in space.. the ultimate artillery that can hit anywhere on the planet!
